  • ENERGY AND INFRASTRUCTURE FORUM LAUNCH EVENT

On Wednesday 19th October the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain launched its Energy and Infrastructure Forum with an evening event that gathered over 30 senior representatives of Spanish and British companies within the above sectors.

The Energy and Infrastructure Forum of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain is chaired by Mr. Alfonso Puga, Chief Commercial Officer at NextDecade, and the board is formed by senior executives with a proven track-record in the energy and infrastructure fields.

Through this initiative, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain aims to provide a platform to highlight the experience and expertise accrued by Spanish companies in these sectors over the past decades as well as the invaluable human capital and talent they bring in at different levels.

The remit of the Forum will thus be the organisation of round tables and debates to contribute to the sharing of best practices, exchange of innovation processes within companies, and the analysis of current issues on energy and infrastructure and relevant policies within these fields. Each session of the forum will count on a keynote speaker to introduce the topic and foster discussion among participants.

Notably; the launch event on October 19th counted on an exceptional speaker: Mr. Riccardo Puliti, Managing Director in charge of the Power and Energy and Natural Resources sectors at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Mr. Antonio Oporto, Board Director for Spain and Mexico at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and a long-standing friend of the Chamber introduced the speaker to the attendees. Mr. Puliti centred his speech on “Energetic Security in Europe”, providing an overview on the current landscape and analysing different scenarios for energy companies.

His address was followed by an open debate and a round of questions, also chaired by Mr. Oporto, which attendees showed enthusiastic interest as they could exchange opinions on the topic. The event came to a close with a drinks reception which offered participants the opportunity to further network and engage in conversation.

  • BETTER ENGLISH IS POSSIBLE

Last Tuesday we hosted another edition of the successful Voice Training  Workshop at our premises. This dynamic session was conducted again by Ms. Dolly May, Voice & Communication Skills coach, from The London School of English, member of the Chamber.

As Ms. May explained, every language has a specific way of pronunciation with unique features which might help to identify the nationality or background of the speaker. However, when it comes to actually putting it into words it can turn out to be a very tricky issue for non-native speakers to deal with. Catching the accent of a language is not easy even when you have been learning the language for a long time. The challenge is not only about sounds, but also stress and intonation. This master class gave attendees the opportunity to learn how to improve their accent with a practical lesson supported with expert advice.

Participants had the chance to work on key aspects that helped them enhance their English speech, such us rhythm and melody. They learnt how to dominate these features by using voice and language, which are basic elements to boost communication skills at all levels.

Attendees had the chance to sharpen their English in a relaxed atmosphere.

Further to this, they also gained valuable tips to improve their overall speaking skills. As in every language, it boils down to highlighting the significant part of speech, namely, the words that hold the essential meaning. You can trap your audience by combining pitch, volume or length to spotlight the key words in your talk. Particularly, when it comes to polishing your discourse, pauses are significantly important. It is always useful putting in halts and stops around ideas, usually after a key word, as a way to emphasize the most important thoughts.

Attendees were really proactive and shared their own experiences about learning how to shape their tone. As Ms. May said to conclude the session, the secret is to keep up the practising. Once the knowledge is gained, results can be noticed rapidly with a bit of training.

We would like to thank The London School of English, Ms. May and of course all attendees. We hope you have made the most of this Voice Training session.

If you missed it but would like to take part in the next one, keep an eye at our UPCOMING EVENTS SECTION. We are planning more exciting activities, which will include additional voice training workshops. Do not miss this opportunity to sharpen your English!

  • Voice Training – The secret of speaking better English

    What makes up an accent?

Last Tuesday we have had the pleasure of hosting a dynamic Seminar at the Spanish Chamber premises; a Voice Training session conducted by voice & communication skills coach, Ms. Dolly May, from The London School of English, member of the Chamber.

The seminar was aimed at Spaniards that wished to improve their English, and in particular, the clarity of their accent. Inversely however, the greatest lesson our attendees took from this master class was that your accent need not change in order to speak better English – and Ms. May made this point very clearly.

Thus, this event has allowed our participants to discover the steps to achieve coherent oration through different exercises of improving ones diction. In an inclusive and fluid way, Ms. May showed the attendees how intonation, rhythm, melody and speed are the foundation of every accent. Some of the exercises consisted of identifying which words were “key” within a sentence – emphasising them so as to pass on our intended message to the listener.

The seminar was broad & dynamic, and attendees took an active part within the whole session by sharing their thoughts and asking some interesting questions.

Similarly, participants learnt that clarity and sharpness are both used to express our ideas in a way that makes our audience more engaged to the content of what we are saying, minimising the need for them to then stop and interpret in a way which ultimately becomes a hassle to both parties.

In conclusion, this seminar was a great opportunity for our participants to develop their command over spoken English. The positive exchange of speaking techniques seems to have left everyone involved with a heightened sense of how to express personal & professional oration.

This has not been the first – and certainly will not be the last – of these sessions! We encourage you to keep an eye on our UPCOMING EVENTS section in our website, or to subscribe to our weekly newsletter, so as to be up to date with our activities!
