  • A New Edition of the “Two Weeks Programme” in London

On Friday 25th July the Spanish Chamber of Commerce hosted an informative session as part of a programme named “The Two Weeks”, which is jointly organised by the Polytechnic University of Valencia and the Valencia University.

This is the third year in a row in which the Spanish Chamber of Commerce  in Great Britain takes part in this exciting initiative. The delegation who came to London was led by Mr. Antonio Reig, Prof. Dr. Industrial Engineer from the Polytechnic University of Valencia and coordinator of the programme.

The “Two Weeks Programme”takes place once a year and it gives 20 students from the above universities the opportunity to travel to London for a 2-week stay to come into contact with an  international job market. During the programme the participants attend a course  about recruitment processes and visit prestigious companies from different industries related to their field of studies, such as Energy, IT, Industrial Production, Technical Consultancy, Financial Engineering, Construction and Real Estate.

The session hosted at the Spanish Chamber provided further information about the role of the institution, the opportunities available in the UK for young graduates and, for the first time, introduced a success story of a Spanish entrepreneur in London.

To start off, Ms. Cristina Carmona, Head of Corporate Relations and Communication, welcomed the participants on behalf of tour institution and spoke about the main services provided by the Chamber and the activities we organise throughout the year. Among these, she focused on The Graduate European Programme, which shares similar goals with ‘The Two Weeks Programme’. This topic proved of special interest for the students, who took the opportunity to enquire further about it.

The next speaker was Ms. Sofía Vázquez, CEO of Mundialengua, a company specialised in finding internships and placements for graduates. She gave the students some useful tips for interviews and selection processes, and highlighted the importance of making a first good impression.

She also mentioned other things to take into consideration such as the need to be flexible in a competitive and demanding market. She also encouraged attendees to look for internships, as in her own words “it is a really good way to explore the market and to learn; even when it is not paid  you may get an opportunity to stay afterwards.”

Afterwards, Mr. Antonio Reig introduced Berta Ferrer, a participant from last year´s program, who is currently working and studying in London. Berta commented on her personal experience and shared some useful tips with attendees.

Finally it was the turn of Ms Paloma Tomas, founder of DotComRepublic, who talked about her experience as an entrepreneur in the UK. Paloma explained the concept of digital marketing and provided students with real examples on how it applies to companies.

  • V Annual Gala Dinner of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce – Celebrating 126 Years.

The scene was set for a spectacular evening for our attendees.

The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain had the pleasure to host the most prestigious black-tie event of its calendar yesterday, at the magnificent Landmark Hotel , member of the Chamber, in Marylebone. It was an evening of high elegance and a friendly rubbing of shoulders, as the attendees from our member and Patron companies mingled enthusiastically with our high-profile guests. There was wine, there was laughter, there was great food, and there was also an atmosphere of positive reflection upon the achievements of the Chamber – and in particular, paying respect to those important figures which have played such a large role in its continued successes. It was in this spirit that the outgoing President, Mr. Fernando Pérez, would later be honoured by our guest speakers.

Guests mingle in the glorious central atrium of the Landmark Hotel.

Formalities began with a Spanish-themed drinks reception; with freshly carved Iberian ham, a variety of Spanish cheeses, and a wonderful selection of wines and cava (kindly provided by Marqués de Cáceres & Hacienda Zorita). The live pianist provided a gentle and inviting soundtrack to this early opportunity for representatives from the plethora of British and Spanish companies to share one another’s company. Cultural anecdotes and shared points of interests electrified the atmosphere of discussion in the hotel’s central atrium, before the Toastmaster directed proceedings to the main event – the dinner itself.

The grand ballroom played host to the three-course gastronomic feast, with the dinner being served by the finest camareros in London. The conversations of the earlier part of the evening extended into a palpable hum of friendly banter during the meal, with the Toastmaster once more standing to attention as attendees were finishing their desserts. He first called the newly-elected President of the Chamber, Mr. Javier Fernández, to entertain the audience with a speech. In well-spirited humour, he gave his thanks to Chamber staff and members of the Executive Committee in supporting him through the transition, whilst also stating his enthusiasm for taking on the great responsibility as President.

The audience listening to the speech of Mr. Javier Fernández, President of the Chamber.

H.E. The Ambassador of Spain, Mr. Federico Trillo, was then invited to take to the podium. Preferring to speak from the heart rather than notes, as he put it, he proceeded to touch on numerous subjects that were important to his role as Ambassador.

Mr. Federico Trillo, H.E. The Ambassador of Spain, making a toast to the Queen of the United Kingdom and the King of Spain.

The final section of formalities were ushered in by the Guest of Honour, Mr. José Manuel Soria, Spanish Minister for Industry, Energy & Tourism, who expanded on the need for Spain to develop its economic integration abroad through positive functions such as the one in which he was speaking. It’s in this capacity that he endevoures to promote Spain abroad,  he remakred, with this being fundamental in his service to the national interest. His words rang with ambition, and his speech conveyed a strong sense that with hard work, brighter things could soon come for the Spanish economy.

After formalities ended, attendees were invited to enjoy the rest of the evening, with of course the help of the hotel bar. In typical Spanish style, many guests stayed chatting long into the night. We thank all of our attendees, our high-profile guests & our sponsors for a truely special event and we sincerely hope that all involved found it to be a wonderful success. • Hispassion – Welcome to the Hispanic World!

    [youtube=http://youtu.be/v9PE2fbd4mQ]

Have you ever thought about expressing your “Hispanic passion”? The Spanish Chamber of Commerce was proud to collaborate with partners Babylon Magazine for Monday night’s 3rd Hispassion event of the year at the swanky H10 Hotel in London’s Waterloo. This informal party, which celebrates the success of Babylon (the country’s only bilingual Spanish-English glossy publication), attracted an eagar crowd of guests from a plethora of professional sectors which stretch between the UK and Spain. Popular as ever – the great food, drink and music flavoured the electric atmosphere between the banterous Brits, Spaniards, and even the odd Italian!

Babylon was first launched in 2008 and it now has a presence all over the world, spreading Hispanic cultural points of interest in a hybrid bi-lingual format of Spanish, and whatever the local language may be. That said, London is at the heart of its international operations, since it was here that Babylon first carved its early inroads into the market which would go on to sow the seeds of its later success.

Mr. Juan Calleja, Babylon’s director, gave a stirring speech welcoming guests back to the third edition of this widely talked about event, and restated the created drive which continues to give the publication such life and such a broad appeal amongst its readers. They were printing more hardcopy editions than ever, he said, and this was only the beginning.

We thank all of our guests for coming, including outgoing President of the Chamber, Fernando Pérez, our attendees from Patron and Member companies, the participants in our Graduate European Programme, and wider guests. We hope you all had a great time, and we are very much looking forward to seeing you at the next Hispassion!

  • Afternoon Talk on the Life of an International Journalist – The GEP Continues

The induction events for this years’ GEP (Graduate European Programme) continued this week, with a thoroughly engaging talk by renowned TVE & RNE correspondents Ms. Anna Bosch & Mr. Íñigo Picabea on the experiences of life as international journalists. The event was held once again at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce premises on Wigmore Street, and played host to over an hour of intrigue for our young GEP participants.

The different culture of news from country to country was the first point to be highlighted in the talk; the differences of which are further intensified in particular cities, such as London and Washington, which have their own micro-cultures. From this insight, Ms. Bosch, who has extensive experience working in both of these great cities, reminded the room that there are also distinct differences in producing news for either domestic or international consumption – the way in which information is then transformed and packaged for its relevant audience.

As a journalist, she said, you are bombarded with information. In one example of her time in Washington D.C., she recalled a time in 2006 when she had to immediately drop all of her plans upon hearing reports of Fidel Castro’s death. As it turns out, he was just taken unwell, but the frenzy of media speculation was intense.

Freedom of, and access to information was also another important point. The processes of collecting reliable data from sources in liberal cities like London, differs hugely to the ability to do the same in say, either Moscow or Caracas. These perceptions provided great food for thought for our attending GEP participants, with questions being posed throughout the talk.

One poignant departing thought was left with the audience at the end of the session, with the idea of the consequences of modern news consumption carrying with it certain dangers. With the advent of countless dispensers of news on the internet and social media, conveyed through varied biases and on focusing on specific topics, an important question needs to be asked: Are we are creating our own world of news by only accessing that we which we want, and forgetting the wider importance of everything else? Perhaps the high level of personal tailoring of how each of us receives news could carry with it the consequence of making us more ignorant, rather than the contrary.

These important issues were a great source of interest for our attendees, and we extend our thanks to our speakers for their time.

  • The Graduate European Programme – Induction Week

This year’s intake from the Chambers’ GEP (Graduate European Programme) enjoyed their first day of professional London life, as they attended their induction seminar at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce premises on Wigmore Street. These young, aspiring, and sharply dressed recent-graduates were keen to take in the practical information that their six month stay in Britain’s capital city would entail, and also enjoyed hearing the personal advice provided by a participant of the programme from last year, who has since been offered a full-time role in the company that she was interning with.

Cristina Carmona, the Programme Coordinator, on the left and Rosa del Campo on the right.

During their induction experience, the Chambers’ Deputy Secretary General, Ms. Rosa del Campo, and our Events Officer and Coordinator of the GEP, Ms. Cristina Carmona Aliaga, provided practical advice to the participating graduates on the upcoming interviews which they will be facing throughout this week. These interviews will determine which companies and sectors our participants will be placed in, and is an important part of the process of cultivating a positive professional attitude in this ever increasingly competitive world.

After a short break, Rosa introduced Mr. Antoni Riera of the International Credit Management company Advantium, which has previously been involved within the programme, as well as to Ms. Marta Sala, who was a participant in the GEP last year and who proceeded to be offered a permanent position at Advantium, member of the Chamber, after her six month placement with the company was complete.

Rosa del Campo, Deputy Secretary General of the Chamber, and Antoni Riera from Advantium.

Mr. Riera spoke of the importance of “connecting the dots” of a broad range of professional experiences and of networking, in his advice to the young attendees. Marta went on to talk about her personal experience of the programme, and poignantly said that throughout the next six months; “you can be a rock, or you can be a sponge”, in reference to the variety of opportunities available in learning new and constructive things.

We will be closely following the progress of this year’s participants, and we wish them all the best in making the most of this unique experience.

  • The Secretary General presents the ‘Graduate European Programme’
