On Monday 17th of September we were delighted to hold our second Mahou Informal Party of 2018 in collaboration with Mahou San Miguel, Patron of the Chamber, and Hispania, member of the Chamber, at their gorgeous flagship restaurant in the heart of the City. The restaurant spans over 9,000 square feet and forms part of the historical Lloyds Bank building while showcasing the best of Spanish lifestyle, gastronomy and culture.
Conveniently located for most of our attendees and with a beautiful sunset outside, the upstairs space started to fill up quickly and there was a relaxed atmosphere as guests caught up with one another after a long summer break and established new connections. The bar certainly proved to be a popular meeting point as guests enjoyed chilled Mahou beers whilst enjoying Hispania’s delicious tapas that were circulating around the room. These included empanada de atún, croquetas, ensaladilla rusa and a selection of jamón ibérico and cheeses, finished off with chocolate and pistachio brownies.
Mahou is one of Spain’s most prominent beer brands and has been a vital part of Madrid’s gastronomy culture for over 125 years. It has a clean, refreshing flavour which makes it the ideal companion for Spanish cuisine.
We would like to thank everyone who attended this event and helped to make it such a wonderful evening, with a special mention to our sponsor for the event, Mahou San Miguel, for making it all possible.
Pictures of the evening will be uploaded soon. If you missed this event and would like to take part in our next Mahou Informal Party, keep an eye out for any announcements found in the Upcoming Events section, active Twitter feed and in our fortnightly newsletter.

On Wednesday 19th October the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain launched its Energy and Infrastructure Forum with an evening event that gathered over 30 senior representatives of Spanish and British companies within the above sectors.
The Energy and Infrastructure Forum of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain is chaired by Mr. Alfonso Puga, Chief Commercial Officer at NextDecade, and the board is formed by senior executives with a proven track-record in the energy and infrastructure fields.
Some of the members of the Energy and Infrastructure Forum.
Through this initiative, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain aims to provide a platform to highlight the experience and expertise accrued by Spanish companies in these sectors over the past decades as well as the invaluable human capital and talent they bring in at different levels.
The remit of the Forum will thus be the organisation of round tables and debates to contribute to the sharing of best practices, exchange of innovation processes within companies, and the analysis of current issues on energy and infrastructure and relevant policies within these fields. Each session of the forum will count on a keynote speaker to introduce the topic and foster discussion among participants.

Notably; the launch event on October 19th counted on an exceptional speaker: Mr. Riccardo Puliti, Managing Director in charge of the Power and Energy and Natural Resources sectors at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Mr. Antonio Oporto, Board Director for Spain and Mexico at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and a long-standing friend of the Chamber introduced the speaker to the attendees. Mr. Puliti centred his speech on “Energetic Security in Europe”, providing an overview on the current landscape and analysing different scenarios for energy companies.

His address was followed by an open debate and a round of questions, also chaired by Mr. Oporto, which attendees showed enthusiastic interest as they could exchange opinions on the topic. The event came to a close with a drinks reception which offered participants the opportunity to further network and engage in conversation.

The Chamber is pleased to introduce a brand new collaboration with The Financial Times on the occasion of the “FT Spain Summit: Restoring Competitiveness” event that is taking place in Madrid on the 14th October at the Ritz Hotel by Belmond.
The Financial Times is one of the world’s leading media business organisations and it has been internationally recognised for their best practices for providing key and accurate news, analysis and comment on global business.
Financial Times Live, the global conferences and events arm of the Financial Times newspaper, presents the “FT Spain Summit: Restoring Competitiveness” with the aim to provide an outlook on the country’s political and economic situation with a special emphasis on strategies to stimulate growth in the future.
The Agenda includes different sessions delivered by government leaders, policy-makers and heads of industry that will be chaired and conducted by Mr. Gideon Rachman, Chief Foreign Affairs Columnist of the Financial Times. You can find further information on the list of speakers here.
According to most Chief Business Executives it seems that Spain is recovering after over two years of recession, and the journey will be focused on new challenges and opportunities that Spain should face as it moves into a new era of recovery to regain its competitiveness.
The event has been shaped to discuss the development of actions that companies, investors or professionals involved in business might have to take in order to respond to current economy growth with the aim to recover the competitive business environment that Spain used to have before the crisis. Topics to be dealt with in this one-day event have to do mainly with government issues, policies of restructuring, challenges for businesses to expand operations in Spain and abroad, the need to attract foreign capital and the situation of Spain in the framework of the European Union. In order to access the full programme of talks, panel discussions and activities, please have a look at the official website of the event.
FT Spain Summit is mainly addressed to senior executives and high representatives from the public and private sectors. Members of the Spanish Chamber in Great Britain are entitled to a 10 % discount.
We would like to express our gratitude to The Financial Times for giving the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain the opportunity to support this significant initiative.
The Spanish Chamber of Commerce has recently signed a collaboration agreement with the region of La Rioja and the city of Logroño following a commercial agenda organised by the Trade and Business Development Department of our institution.
Throughout the year the Trade and Business Development Department of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain organises and delivers several trade missions and commercial agendas to help Spanish companies introduce their products and services into the UK and vice versa. The last of such actions brought to London several representatives from La Rioja and Logroño for a two-day visit on 25th and 26th of November to promote the capital city and the region.
A delegation from both institutions came to London as a result of a joint project which focuses on improving the development of Logroño and La Rioja as a region by providing local business with new tools and initiatives for their promotion abroad as well as by attracting foreign investment to the area. The Trade Department of the Spanish Chamber has been an essential part of this mission as it has been in charge of contacting the different organisations and arranging the meetings for the dates the delegation of La Rioja and Logroño were in the capital.
On the first day of their visit the representatives of La Rioja and Logroño met with the President of the Chamber, Javier Fernández-Hidalgo, our Secretary General, Igor Urra, and our Head of Trade and Business Development, Rubén Fernández. During the meeting both parties signed a collaboration agreement that will help promote local businesses in London.
From left to right: Mr. José María Ruiz (President of La Rioja Chamber of Commerce), (Logroño City Council), Ms. Concepción Gamarra (Mayor of Logroño) and Mr. Javier Fernández (President of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain) signing the agreement.
Following on the original idea of the joint project, this first visit abroad has mainly focused in fostering business and commercial links to attract investment, paying special attention to encourage economic development in Logroño by assessing possible avenues of collaboration through UK-based institutions.
Between them, the delegation of La Rioja and Logroño met a group of local Chambers representing Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Swindon and Berkshire. They also had a meeting with representatives of the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish Embassy. On other hand, the delegation from La Rioja and Logroño also held meetings with two London-based universities to assess the possibility of organising activities in collaboration and carrying out academic exchanges for both students and professors.
It is not the first time that the Spanish Chamber has worked with other local Chambers in Spain to support collaboration agreements to facilitate business links with the UK market. In fact, the Spanish Chamber has previously worked with several Chambers of Commerce (León, Lleida, Girona, Sabadell, A Coruña, Vigo and more recently Alicante) as well as with the Confederations of Business Industries of the Province of Badajoz (COEBA), Albacete (FEDA), and the Spanish Confederation of Small and Medium Businesses of Alicante (CEPYME).
For companies, local Chambers and Confederations interested in receiving more information about trade or commercial missions please do not hesitate to put yourself in contact with us on +44 (0) 207 0099 070 or by email at info@spanishchamber.co.uk
The scene was set for a spectacular evening for our attendees.
The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain had the pleasure to host the most prestigious black-tie event of its calendar yesterday, at the magnificent Landmark Hotel , member of the Chamber, in Marylebone. It was an evening of high elegance and a friendly rubbing of shoulders, as the attendees from our member and Patron companies mingled enthusiastically with our high-profile guests. There was wine, there was laughter, there was great food, and there was also an atmosphere of positive reflection upon the achievements of the Chamber – and in particular, paying respect to those important figures which have played such a large role in its continued successes. It was in this spirit that the outgoing President, Mr. Fernando Pérez, would later be honoured by our guest speakers.
Guests mingle in the glorious central atrium of the Landmark Hotel.
Formalities began with a Spanish-themed drinks reception; with freshly carved Iberian ham, a variety of Spanish cheeses, and a wonderful selection of wines and cava (kindly provided by Marqués de Cáceres & Hacienda Zorita). The live pianist provided a gentle and inviting soundtrack to this early opportunity for representatives from the plethora of British and Spanish companies to share one another’s company. Cultural anecdotes and shared points of interests electrified the atmosphere of discussion in the hotel’s central atrium, before the Toastmaster directed proceedings to the main event – the dinner itself.

The grand ballroom played host to the three-course gastronomic feast, with the dinner being served by the finest camareros in London. The conversations of the earlier part of the evening extended into a palpable hum of friendly banter during the meal, with the Toastmaster once more standing to attention as attendees were finishing their desserts. He first called the newly-elected President of the Chamber, Mr. Javier Fernández, to entertain the audience with a speech. In well-spirited humour, he gave his thanks to Chamber staff and members of the Executive Committee in supporting him through the transition, whilst also stating his enthusiasm for taking on the great responsibility as President.

H.E. The Ambassador of Spain, Mr. Federico Trillo, was then invited to take to the podium. Preferring to speak from the heart rather than notes, as he put it, he proceeded to touch on numerous subjects that were important to his role as Ambassador.

The final section of formalities were ushered in by the Guest of Honour, Mr. José Manuel Soria, Spanish Minister for Industry, Energy & Tourism, who expanded on the need for Spain to develop its economic integration abroad through positive functions such as the one in which he was speaking. It’s in this capacity that he endevoures to promote Spain abroad, he remakred, with this being fundamental in his service to the national interest. His words rang with ambition, and his speech conveyed a strong sense that with hard work, brighter things could soon come for the Spanish economy.

After formalities ended, attendees were invited to enjoy the rest of the evening, with of course the help of the hotel bar. In typical Spanish style, many guests stayed chatting long into the night. We thank all of our attendees, our high-profile guests & our sponsors for a truely special event and we sincerely hope that all involved found it to be a wonderful success. Please do interact and browse our blog in order to keep up to date with Chamber news & events, and click here to access the gallery of photos of the whole evening.
