  • THE XVII EDITION OF THE GRADUATE EUROPEAN PROGRAMME – INDUCTION WEEK

On Monday 14th September, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce welcomed a new edition of the Graduate European Programme. The programme offers university graduates the opportunity to undertake work experience in London at the same time as they attend different workshops. The programme, which this year has 12 participants, started with an Induction Week which included several talks and visits to institutions.

The Secretary General Mr. Igor Urra, along with Ms. Cristina Carmona, Head of Corporate Relations and Communication and Co-ordinator of the Programme, welcomed the group on Monday 14th September at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce premises. After the encouragement words from the Secretary General, who urged candidates to make the most of this opportunity, Cristina Carmona delivered a session aimed at helping candidates to succeed at the interviews they would be facing later in the week. The session also provided participants with useful tips to write a CV and to face a personal interview.

Following a break, participants had the opportunity to meet Ms. Rosa Del Campo, Commercial Relationships Manager at UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), who explained the role of the UKTI and how they support overseas companies to land in the UK, but also how they help UK-based companies to enter new markets. The session concluded with an overview of those countries with a significant foreign investment presence in the UK, and provided examples on how Spanish companies have increased their internationalisation plans in recent years.

Later that day, three former participants of the Graduate European Programme visited the premises of the Chamber. Ms. Sandra Del Campo, Ms. Carmen Villanueva and Ms. Sofía Marcoartu shared their experience with the attendees and explained how taking part in this programme eventually led them both to find a job in London. They encouraged this year’s participants to make the most of the work experience. The talk concluded with a round of questions about life in London, hints to do well at the interviews and the differences between work routines in Spain and UK.

Before starting the interviews phase, on Tuesday 15th September the induction week followed with a visit to the Spanish Embassy in London, where participants were welcomed by Mr. Juan López-Herrera, the Minister Counsellor. He provided this year’s candidates with an overview of the main areas of work of the Embassy in the country and why the diplomatic service is important. To conclude the visit, the participants had some time to make a few questions to Mr. Juan López-Herrera.

They went on to offer an overview of the life of a foreign press correspondent, the way they work and the main advantages and inconveniences of being a correspondent. At the end of their talks and after the Q&A, Mr. Barcia showed the participants his portable radio-set and explained them how he works when he is not in his studio.

Mr. Antonio Oporto started by explaining participants the historic context where the Bank was created so they could better understand its scope of action. He went on to share his insights on how current affairs can have an impact on the work of the EBRD, especially in regard to new countries where the bank operates.  A very interactive Q&A followed the session where participants were able to learn more about specific areas of interest for the bank.

  • Former GEP Participants Linkedin Group

    Logo.formerGEP.pequeño

We are delighted to launch a brand new initiative to continue connecting people and businesses, this time with a slightly different focus.

Since 1990 the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain has been organising The Graduate European Programme (GEP) –formerly known as Young European Entrepreneur Programme-, aimed at providing international work experience to the participants.

The GEP has paved the way for many participants to start their professional life in London or to land a job in Spain. More importantly, thanks to having taken part in it many candidates improved their CV and employability in an ever competitive market.

Since the beginning the programme there has also been a focus on improving the participants’ language and professional skills. In fact, the GEP is complimented by a Business English course along with a series of workshops at Regent’s University London.

It is been a long journey since the first edition kicked off 25 years ago and year on year we have witnessed how the programme has increased in importance and visibility. In every edition we are overwhelmed by the amount of talented candidates who apply. In fact, one of the greatest rewards is to see how many of them receive an offer to stay in the company or move on to new challenges afterwards.

In this time nearly 200 people have completed the programme and we would like to provide them with a platform to stay connected with us and among themselves. This is why we have launched a LinkedIn group exclusively for former GEP participants, which will allow the exchange of useful information and professional experiences as well as the publication of job vacancies.

If you have been a GEP, do not hesitate to join the LinkedIn group by clicking here. If you are not, but you would like to publish a job opportunity in the group, please contact us at spanishchamber@spanishchamber.co.uk

If you are a graduate interested in the programme and would be interested in further information about it, you can find it within our website in the Graduate European Programme section under the Career Services menu. Likewise prospective candidates will find helpful the section dedicated to frequently asked questions.

  • GEP 2013: Your Career Begins Here

The Spanish Chamber of Commerce has recently welcomed  a  new group of participants of the Graduate European Programme. This programme offers university graduates the opportunity to undertake work experience in London at the same time as they attend Business English classes and workshops at Regent’s University London.

15 university graduates arrived in London on Monday 16th September to attend the Induction Week aimed at providing the participants with useful advice on their new life experience. The programme for the week included several talks and a company visit.

The Secretary General Mr. Igor Urra, along with Ms. Cristina Carmona, Head of Corporate Relations and Communication and co-ordinator of the Programme, met the group at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce premises on Wigmore Street for a welcoming session to introduce the programme.

    IMG_2218
Mrs. Eleanor Green during her talk to the participants of the GEP

After this first talk, they had the chance to listen to Mrs. Eleanor Green, from Mundialengua UK, member of the Chamber. Mrs. Green explained some useful tips and advice on how to write a CV and a Cover Letter, but more importantly, she focused on how to succeed at interviews and provided very useful tips to answer frequently asked questions. Participants found this especially helpful as they would be facing several interviews during their first week.

Later that day, the candidates had the opportunity to meet two of the participants who took part in the Programme last year: Ms. Tania Torrado and Mr. Ignacio Alastrué. They explained their experience and how taking part in this programme eventually led them both to find a job in London.  Tania and Ignacio encouraged students to attend the English classes and to do their best during the internship by being proactive. The talk concluded with a round of questions about life in London, hints to do well at the interviews and the differences between work routines in Spain and UK.

The week followed with some other activities for the participants to complete their induction. One of the most popular talks was delivered on Tuesday by Mr. Miguel Ángel Idígorasthe UK correspondent of TVE, and Mr. Roberto Casado, correspondent from the economic newspaper Expansión.

The session was designed to provide an inside perspective on the work of a journalist abroad and what kinds of news they need to look for in the UK in order to provide content that is relevant to a Spanish audience. They both shared their previous experiences abroad, their knowledge and what a day at work looks like.  They also compared the way journalism is done in Spain and in Great Britain, and how the latter has always been a reference for Spanish media as a synonym of quality and good practices.

Next on the agenda for the participants of the XV edition of our Graduate European Programma was a visit to the premises of our member Ebury Partners Ltd, a foreign exchange company. This activity provided attendees with a greater understanding of the currency market and why foreign exchange transactions are important to bear in mind when doing business abroad. Mr. Fernando Cid, Head of the Spanish Desk at Ebury Partners, welcomed the candidates and he later introduced Mr. Fernando Pérez and Mr. Joan Bonilla, who were in charge of explaining howthe foreign exchange sector works and provided several case studies of clients Ebury Partners has been working with lately and their specific needs.

To finish a very intensive week, on Friday participants visited  Regent’s University London, member of the Spanish Chamber, where they will attend the business English classes and workshops during the 6 months the programme lasts. Mr. Steve Phillips, Head of School and responsible for this academic side of the programme, welcomed the participants and informed them about the schedule and their teachers. At the end of the session, participants were shown around the school facilities.

We would like to thank our speakers for the different sessions and the companies that kindly collaborated with us during this week. We will be following the progress of this year’s participants and encourage them to make the most of this unique experience.

  • Afternoon Talk on the Life of an International Journalist – The GEP Continues

The induction events for this years’ GEP (Graduate European Programme) continued this week, with a thoroughly engaging talk by renowned TVE & RNE correspondents Ms. Anna Bosch & Mr. Íñigo Picabea on the experiences of life as international journalists. The event was held once again at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce premises on Wigmore Street, and played host to over an hour of intrigue for our young GEP participants.

The different culture of news from country to country was the first point to be highlighted in the talk; the differences of which are further intensified in particular cities, such as London and Washington, which have their own micro-cultures. From this insight, Ms. Bosch, who has extensive experience working in both of these great cities, reminded the room that there are also distinct differences in producing news for either domestic or international consumption – the way in which information is then transformed and packaged for its relevant audience.

As a journalist, she said, you are bombarded with information. In one example of her time in Washington D.C., she recalled a time in 2006 when she had to immediately drop all of her plans upon hearing reports of Fidel Castro’s death. As it turns out, he was just taken unwell, but the frenzy of media speculation was intense.

Freedom of, and access to information was also another important point. The processes of collecting reliable data from sources in liberal cities like London, differs hugely to the ability to do the same in say, either Moscow or Caracas. These perceptions provided great food for thought for our attending GEP participants, with questions being posed throughout the talk.

One poignant departing thought was left with the audience at the end of the session, with the idea of the consequences of modern news consumption carrying with it certain dangers. With the advent of countless dispensers of news on the internet and social media, conveyed through varied biases and on focusing on specific topics, an important question needs to be asked: Are we are creating our own world of news by only accessing that we which we want, and forgetting the wider importance of everything else? Perhaps the high level of personal tailoring of how each of us receives news could carry with it the consequence of making us more ignorant, rather than the contrary.

These important issues were a great source of interest for our attendees, and we extend our thanks to our speakers for their time.

  • The Graduate European Programme – Induction Week

This year’s intake from the Chambers’ GEP (Graduate European Programme) enjoyed their first day of professional London life, as they attended their induction seminar at the Spanish Chamber of Commerce premises on Wigmore Street. These young, aspiring, and sharply dressed recent-graduates were keen to take in the practical information that their six month stay in Britain’s capital city would entail, and also enjoyed hearing the personal advice provided by a participant of the programme from last year, who has since been offered a full-time role in the company that she was interning with.

Cristina Carmona, the Programme Coordinator, on the left and Rosa del Campo on the right.

During their induction experience, the Chambers’ Deputy Secretary General, Ms. Rosa del Campo, and our Events Officer and Coordinator of the GEP, Ms. Cristina Carmona Aliaga, provided practical advice to the participating graduates on the upcoming interviews which they will be facing throughout this week. These interviews will determine which companies and sectors our participants will be placed in, and is an important part of the process of cultivating a positive professional attitude in this ever increasingly competitive world.

After a short break, Rosa introduced Mr. Antoni Riera of the International Credit Management company Advantium, which has previously been involved within the programme, as well as to Ms. Marta Sala, who was a participant in the GEP last year and who proceeded to be offered a permanent position at Advantium, member of the Chamber, after her six month placement with the company was complete.

Rosa del Campo, Deputy Secretary General of the Chamber, and Antoni Riera from Advantium.

Mr. Riera spoke of the importance of “connecting the dots” of a broad range of professional experiences and of networking, in his advice to the young attendees. Marta went on to talk about her personal experience of the programme, and poignantly said that throughout the next six months; “you can be a rock, or you can be a sponge”, in reference to the variety of opportunities available in learning new and constructive things.

We will be closely following the progress of this year’s participants, and we wish them all the best in making the most of this unique experience.
