The First CIAC Event of 2015: Business Risks & Mitigation

On Thursday 12^th March the Spanish Chamber of Commerce will take part in an evening talk on “Business Risks & Mitigation: Latin America” organised by the Council of Ibero American Chambers in the UK (CIAC). The event will be held at the Meliá White House hotel, members of the Chamber, and it will be kindly sponsored by ONTIER, also one of our associated companies.

For those who are not familiar with the Council of Ibero American Chambers in the UK, it was formed on the 10^th February 2014. The CIAC is an independent business to business network of UK based chambers with unrivalled expertise and contacts across Latin America, Spain and the Caribbean with a core membership of over 600 businesses. This event will be the third activity organised by the CIAC after the success of the previous ones. On this particular occasion, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to a range of experts in the international business area who will contribute with their insights on the challenges that foreign investors face -and how to overcome them – when entering the Latin American market.

We are delighted to announce that Mr. Adolfo Suárez Illana, International President of ONTIER and Irene Mia, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Economist Intelligence Unit, will be among the panel of speakers.

Adolfo Suárez founded Suárez & Illana Abogados, a prestigious law firm that has been integrated since July 2010 into ONTIER. He is a specialist on negotiation and corporate law and has participated on a large number of national and transnational corporate businesses.

Mr. Adolfo Suárez Illana, International PresIdent of ONTIER, will be one of our speakers at the next CIAC event.

Irene Mia holds an MA in Latin American Studies and a PhD in International Economic and Trade Law. She has written and spoken extensively on issues related to national competitiveness and development, serving as lead author and editor on a number of regional and topical competitiveness papers and reports.

We will also count with the presence of Mr. Seamus Andrew, Managing partner of ONTIER UK; Dr. Álvaro Enrique Leyva Muñoz, Partner of ONTIER Colombia, and Mr. Luis Miguel Ramírez Ruggeberg, Senior Associate of ONTIER Mexico, who will provide an overview from the British side as well as from their specific countries.

This talk will provide a unique opportunity to obtain first-hand insight into information on the current business climate in Latin America with a focus on how British-based companies can better prepare to enter this market and key aspects they need to consider before, during and after they have set up their business activity. The event will be followed by a networking drinks reception where attendees will be able to meet and discuss further with the speakers.

The networking reception will provide a unique opportunity to interact with guests.

CIAC NETWORKING DRINKS

On Monday 17^th November the Spanish Chamber of Commerce took part in the Council of Ibero American Chambers in the UK (CIAC) Networking Drinks that was held at the Melia White House hotel, member of our Chamber.

This event was the second organised by the CIAC after the successful launch in March 2014. On this informal gathering attendees had the opportunity to network with representatives from member companies of the different Chambers that belong to the CIAC.

The members of the different companies that belong to the CIAC organisations had an excellent opportunity to meet fellow colleagues from other countries.

During the evening, one of the members of our Executive Committe gave a short speech to thank guests for their support and to highlight the importance of creating a solid professional network to support business with commercial interests and links in the UK, Spain and Latin America. Afterwards, he gave the floor to Cristina Zaragoza, from Meliá White House, who announced the prize draw: an afternoon tea for two people. The lucky winner was Ben Stern from Surrey Satellite Technology.

Official launch of The Council of Ibero American Chambers

On Wednesday 19^th March the Spanish Chamber of Commerce took part in the official launch of a special project that has been developed by several organisations for over two years and has finally come to fruition: the CIAC, the Council of Ibero American Chambers in the UK, formed on the 10^th February with the signed Memorandum of Understanding by the Chambers that participate.

The CIAC is an independent business to business (B2B) network of UK based chambers with unrivalled expertise and contacts in Latin America and Spain. This Memorandum will make stronger the support network available to British-based companies seeking to enter or expand into the Latin American and Spanish market. This initiative has been conceived with the aim to proactively stimulate trade, investment and multilateral cooperation between the UK, Spain and Latin America and represent the interest of the member companies in Latin America and the UK.

The event congregated around 200 attendees coming from different networks of the chambers involved in the CIAC: The British Argentine Chamber of Commerce, The British & Colombian Chamber of Commerce, The Caribbean Britain Business Council, The Mexican Chamber of Commerce – GB, The Cuba Initiative and The Central American Business Council.

Representatives from the companies of the different chambers involved in the CIAC had the chance to start engaging and exploring the possibilities this wide network creates.

Attendees were extremely proactive and did not miss any opportunity to introduce themselves to their colleagues from other chambers, start exploring new opportunities and meet like-minded professionals, while enjoying some food delights and nice wine.

The event kicked off with the speech from Mr. Haydon Warren-Gash, the Chairman of the British & Colombian Chamber of Commerce, who is currently holding the Presidency of the CIAC. Mr. Warren-Gash pointed out that “All the Chambers of Commerce represented encounter similar challenges but also recognise similar opportunities and common interests. By working together, we can achieve more for our members than any of us could ever do working alone; the decision to get together in this way has been widely welcomed by all. The opportunities in Spain, Latin America and the Caribbean are greater today than they’ve ever been, so let us work together to make full use of CIAC”.

The President of the CIAC thanked ONTIER, official Sponsor of the event, for their support and so gave the floor to Mr. Seamus Andrew, founder partner of this firm and CEO of the London office.

For this remarkable occasion, The Mayfair Hotel, part of Edwardian Group London, Patron of the Spanish Chamber, prepared their spectacular Crystal Room to hold the reception.
