ANNUAL GOLDEN AWARD 2015

The Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain celebrated its Annual Golden Award on 28th April at the Spanish Embassy in London.

The Annual Golden Award is one of the main corporate events of the Spanish Chamber that acknowledges the significant commercial activity of a Spanish company in the United Kingdom during the previous year. On this occasion, the awarded company was Codorníu, a Spanish family wine and cava producer with almost five centuries of history. Mrs. María del Mar Raventós, President of the Company, received the award on behalf of the company and conveyed her gratitude for this recognition.

The award was presented by H.E. the Ambassador of Spain, Mr. Federico Trillo-Figueroa, who greeted Mrs. María del Mar Raventós during his welcome speech. The President of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Javier Fernández Hidalgo, highlighted the milestones of tradition in Codorníu’s lifetime, being the oldest company in Spain and one of the oldest in the world. Likewise, he took the opportunity to announce our most recent patron, Ernst & Young, and reminded our members that we will be celebrating our Annual General Meeting on 16^th June. He thanked all the attendees and sponsors for their kind support and presence then he presented the award to the President of Codorníu, who also wanted to extend a word of thanks.

Mrs. Raventós shared her feelings towards this award as she felt it a very important recognition to the work of the company and all the family members involved in the business (593 members nowadays) since 1555, the year of the foundation of the company by Jaume de Codorníu. She briefly went through the family story that surrounds this brand and mentioned that each member would be proud of receiving this prize; it represented a boost to their company, to keep selling and growing in new markets.

Mrs. María del Mar Raventós thanked the Spanish Chamber for this award in the name of the whole family of Codorníu.

We had the pleasure to count on more than 200 guests on the evening, representing member companies from both Spain and the UK. All these members who decided to join us on this special occasion enjoyed the opportunity to extend their network and interact with professionals from the Anglo-Spanish business community.

Furthermore, thanks to our member Lolo Investments Ltd, which operates under the brand of Viandas de Salamanca, curtesy of them our attendees had a unique culinary experience with an excellent tasting of several Iberian products such as Iberian ham and other cured meats.

More than 200 attendees decided to join us on this special occasion.

Annual Patrons’ Dinner at the Spanish Embassy

On Monday 23rd March the Spanish Chamber organised the traditional Annual Patrons’ Dinner. The event was held at the Spanish Embassy and H.E. the Ambassador of Spain Mr. Federico Trillo-Figueroa was our exceptional host for the evening. With this annual dinner the Spanish Chamber acknowledges the support of its Patrons and for such an occasion guests could taste a selection of wines and cava kindly offered by Codorníu.

Codorníu kindly provided the wines and cava for the Patrons’ Dinner.

To begin the evening, guests were welcomed with a selection of canapés that they could enjoy along with cava and wine during the pre-dinner reception. This was the perfect opportunity for guests to greet in a relaxed manner and catch up before dinner. After the reception, Patrons moved to the dining area to take their seats. Our guests enjoyed a three-course dinner which consisted of roasted vegetables escalivada, dover sole with scallops and wild rice, and chocolate mousse with almond crunch.

After the main course, the President of the Spanish Chamber, Mr. Javier Fernández Hidalgo, opened the proceedings and welcomed everyone on behalf of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce and thanked the Ambassador of Spain for kindly hosting this event at his residence.He then welcomed the representative of Ernst & Young as new Patron of the Chamber and announced the date of another forthcoming Patrons’ event. The President ended his speech encouraging attendees to bring forward ideas and projects that the Chamber can work on.

He then gave the floor to H.E. Mr. Federico Trillo-Figueroa, who thanked attendees and highlighted the level of commitment Patrons’ show with the Spanish Chamber and how more and more Spanish companies are getting a relevant presence in the UK market thanks to key operations. This is the case of Banco Sabadell, which after the acquisition of TSB will become the second biggest Spanish bank in the UK. The Ambassador mentioned other recent examples of Spanish companies which have been trusted to undertake high-caliber government projects in the country, which can only be interpreted as a positive sign.

H.E. Mr. Federico Trillo-Figueroa, who kindly hosted the event at his residence, highlighted the level of trust that the British government has in Spanish companies, as proved recent high-caliber operations in the country.

After the speeches, it was time for guests to enjoy the dessert and then to move on to the main reception room, where coffee and petit fours were being served. Attendees enjoyed the end of the event in a relaxed atmosphere and could exchange impressions with the Ambassador and President of the Chamber. This was the perfect closure for such a fantastic evening.

The dinner took place at one of the Embassy’s most impressive rooms.

NEW YEAR’S DRINKS RECEPTION

Last 21^st January the Spanish Chamber of Commerce celebrated the NEW YEAR’S DRINKS RECEPTION, our first corporate event of 2015 and the opening of a new exciting year full of activities. We had the pleasure to host this event at the main ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel at Park Lane, member of the Chamber, a perfect setting which contributed to create a delightful atmosphere on this special occasion.

It was a very successful event as almost 250 representatives from Spanish and British companies joined us on the evening. They enjoyed the opportunity to greet the New Year and catch up with other fellow colleagues and also meet new people while developing their networking skills.

The event began at 6.30pm and all our guests were welcomed with a glass of wine and cava and were escorted to the resplendent ballroom.

Later on, the President of the Spanish Chamber, Mr. Javier Fernández Hidalgo, gave his traditional speech, greeting our guests on behalf of the institution, thanking all members for their continuous support towards the Chamber year after year, and wishing that 2015 will be a very fruitful year for the Anglo-Spanish business community.

Furthermore, thanks to our member Spanish Ham Master, we had a first-class experience tasting an incredible 9 kg. Iberian ham cut by the renown Spanish Ham Master, Mr. José Sol. He beat his personal record of cutting such a big ham in only 2 hours, which also showed the warm welcome our guests gave to this gastronomic delight.

Likewise, we would like to express our gratitude to Codorníu, for their support and contribution to make this evening a great gathering by kindly sponsoring our reception with their finest wine and cava. These refreshing and carefully elaborated beverages perfectly matched with the innovative catering prepared by the kitchen of the Four Seasons Hotel that reflected a soft taste of Asian influences.

VI Annual Gala Dinner of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce

On Thursday 27^th November we held our VI Annual Gala Dinner, which took place at the ME London Hotel, member of the Spanish Chamber. This corporate event is the most important activity that the Spanish Chamber organises during the year and it is attended by leading representatives from a wide range of British and Spanish companies with business interests in both countries.

This black-tie dinner was presided by the Ambassador of Spain, H.E. Mr. Federico Trillo-Figueroa and we counted on the attendance of Mr. César Alierta, Executive Chairman and CEO of Telefónica, as our Guest of Honour.

The event began at 7.00pm with a drinks reception at the hotel bar, allowing guests to interact with each other while enjoying a glass of wine and cava, provided respectively by the D.O Almansa and Codorníu.

After the reception, guests were ushered to the dining room and went on to take their seats. The proceedings of the dinner started with H.E. the Ambassador of Spain leading the traditional loyal toasts in honour of the Queen of Great Britain and the King of Spain.

The dinner, attended by over 200 guests, took place at the impressive ME Room.

Speeches began after the main course was cleared with the President of the Spanish Chamber, Mr. Javier Fernández Hidalgo, welcoming guests on behalf of the institution and thanking Mr. César Alierta for his presence at such an important occasion.

In his speech, the President also announced three new Benefactor members: the law firm Cuatrecasas, Gonçalves, Pereira, the beer producer Estrella de Galicia and the British law firm Lewis Silkin. They have been the first companies to join this new membership category at the Spanish Chamber. The President also highlighted the importance for the Chamber to receive the support of its existing members and Patrons, which contribute to the success of our activities.

The President of the Spanish Chamber Javier Fernández Hidalgo warmly thanked the continuous support of our members during his speech.

After our President, H.E. the Ambassador took to the floor and addressed attendees. At the end of his speech he introduced our Guest of Honour, Mr. Cesar Alierta, Executive Chairman and CEO of Telefónica, who made clear that the UK is a key market for the company, which currently has 24 million customers in the country. In fact, he explained that the trade flow between the two countries amounted to 8,800 million euros, with the UK being the fifth highest customer of Telefónica with regard to exports.

After speeches ended, attendees were invited to enjoy some after-dinner drinks in the Radio rooftop bar, which boasts a superb outdoor terrace and spectacular panoramic views of London. The atmosphere was vibrant and relaxed as our Patrons, members and their guests mingled and exchanged their impressions of the evening.

COMING SOON: THE «VI GALA DINNER»

We are pleased to announce that on 27^th of November; the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain is holding one of the highlights of its calendar: the “VI Gala Dinner”. On this occasion the event is taking place in one of the trendiest venues in London: the ME London Hotel, which is a member of the Chamber.

The traditional dinner will be presided by by H.E. The Ambassador of Spain, and our special Guest of Honour, Mr. César Alierta Izuel, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Telefónica.

The Spanish Chamber is honoured to have such a personality for the night. Throughout his intense career, Mr. Alierta has taken part in several boards of renowned companies. He holds a degree in law from the University of Zaragoza and an MBA from Columbia University in New York (1970). His first job was at Banco Urquijo where he was appointed manager of the capital-markets division. Later on, he worked as president for Beta Capital. In 1996 Alierta started as head in Tabacalera, a state-run company. Under his leadership Tabacalera became the world’s leading producer and distributor of tobacco.

In 1997 he was appointed as director of Telefonica, and it was in 2000 when he became the CEO of Telefonica. Since Alierta has been in charge of Telefónica, they have been expanding their business internationally quickly and extensively.

Telefonica, a Spanish broadband and telecommunications provider that operates globally, is currently the sixth-largest mobile network provider in the world.

Moving on to the anticipated event, the Reception and Gala Dinner will be held at the central, modern and unique ME London, one the leading hotels in the centre of London, aside from having privileged panoramic views of London from its Roof Bar with outdoor terrace.

On this magnificent occasion, attendees are going to be able to enjoy Red and White wines kindly sponsored by D.O. Almansa, a qualified denomination of origin from the region with the same name in Castilla La-Mancha, and they will toast with “Blanc de Blancs”, by ANNA de Codorníu Cava that has just been launched in the UK.

We would like to express our gratitude to D.O. Almansa and Codorníu for their support and contribution to the dinner by providing such special products for the night.

This major event is a unique opportunity to meet Cesar Alierta and have dinner surrounded by the representatives of the British-Spanish companies at the emblematic ME London.
