We are very pleased to announce that as one of the final events of our 130th anniversary, our VII Gala Dinner will be held on Tuesday 6th December at the exclusive Merchant Taylors’ Hall, located in the heart of the City of London.

This exceptional celebration will be the most important activity that the Spanish Chamber will organise in 2016 and it will be attended by leading representatives from a wide range of British and Spanish companies. Following tradition, the event will be presided by H.E. the Ambassador of Spain, Mr. Federico Trillo – Figueroa.

On such a special occasion and to culminate an even more special year for our institution; we are privileged to have Mr. Álex Cruz, Chairman and CEO of British Airways, as our Guest of Honour and we would like to take this opportunity to introduce him as well as the company he represents.

The Gala Dinner is the perfect opportunity for guests to network and explore synergies.

As for British Airways, the British company is the flag carrier and largest airline in the United Kingdom based on fleet size with more than 40 years of history. BA is one of the founding member of the Oneworld airline alliance. The alliance has since grown to become the third-largest, after SkyTeam and Star Alliance.

British Airways merged with Iberia on 21 January 2011, formally creating the International Airlines Group (IAG), the world’s third-largest airline group in terms of annual revenue and the second-largest in Europe. IAG is listed on the London Stock Exchange and in the FTSE 100 Index.

  • Annual Roundup of 2012

The exceptional Jubilee year of 2012 is coming to its end and it is time to look back and go through these past months of intense activity.

The year was opened, as usual, with our New Years Drinks Reception in January. This hallmarked the start of a year of renewed focus in delivering events, training and commercial agendas for the benefit of our members.

It’s that time of the year in London, when Christmas comes crackling into life with fireworks and miles of decorative lights.

In April, we named the winner of our Annual Golden Award as being MAPFRE, a Spanish company recognised as making a significant impact within the UK market over the previous year. Not long after, we held our Annual General Meeting ,  which was devoted to providing our members with an open account of the Chamber’s activities & statistics, in order to contrast its successes with the year before. What followed was a formal dinner, presided by the Ambassador of Spain, and with our Guest of Honor being Ms. Tamara Rojo, the internationally acclaimed ballerina who had just been appointed as the Artistic Director of the English National Ballet.

To round off the year was the largest event of our calendar, the Annual Gala Dinner which this year counted on the presence of Mr. José Manuel Soria,  Spanish Minister for Trade, Energy & Tourism. All of these landmark formal events speak of the ability of which the Chamber is able to bring its members together on a diverse, inclusive and grande scale. But this isn’t the whole story.

Our Annual Golden Award  was hosted at the Spanish Embassy.

The Chamber has run over 50 events in the past year, from training workshops and networking seminars, to collaborative member events and informal parties. All, we hope, have been thoroughly enjoyed by our members, as their continually high levels of demand suggests. We have also worked with LSE Enterprise, Patrons of the Chamber, to provide a series of talks with high profile speakers, including  Mr. Antonio Vázquez, Chairman of Iberia, Mr. Álex Cruz, CEO of Vueling, and Mr. Pedro J. Ramírez, Editorial Director of Unidad Editorial.

We have also laid on exclusive events with our Patrons, for which we have created the Patrons’ Club which this year has included different activities with high-profile speakers such as Mr. Varel Freeman, Vice-President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development; Mr. John Cridland, Director-General of the CBI; and Mr. Jaime García-Legaz, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade.

We have nurtured new talent, too. The XIV Edition of our Graduate European Programme took off in September and welcomed 14 participants that will be carrying out work-experience at London-based companies for 6 months. At the same time, they will be attending different commercial workshops and English lessons on business to help compliment their professional placements.

To end our calendar, it was our great pleasure to celebrate this fantastic year with our ever-popular Informal Christmas Party, which took place on the King’s Road, last week. The event was kindly sponsored by Beefeater 24, meaning that the G&T’s were being enjoyed by our enthusiastic guests long into the night – saying fairwell to an active past year in style.

As a final remark, we’d like to thank all of our members and attendees which have made the events over the last year such a success. With more in-depth news on the various trade partnerships and commercial opportunities which were successfully cultivated over the past year, please do have a browse of our earlier blog posts. Beyond that, we only wish to say that we are looking forward to working with you, and new companies on the scene, next year!

  • LSE Conferences: «Reinventing Air Travel – Low Cost, High Service»

Vueling is the second  low cost airline in Europe.  Still, they have built a business model that seems hard to achieve: low rates + quality services.

Álex Cruz, CEO of Vueling, visited London last week and held a conference about he company he runs and the key points that have lead them to become one of the most popular low cost airlines in Europe. This  lecture  belongs to a series of conferences:  «Strategy and Leadership in Spain» ,  a collaboration between the London School of Economics and the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Great Britain.

The conference titled «Reinventing Air Travel – Low Cost, High Service» was introduced by Paul Preston, British Historian, Hispanist and Chairman of the Catalan Observatory, LSE. Then Mr Cruz took the audience through the history of airlines, from the beginning of commercial aviation in the 50’s until the era of mass transport started back in the 80’s.  «In just some years flying changed from being only for rich people to be accesible and cheap for everyone», he pointed out.

A flight from Barcelona to Ibiza inaugurated Vueling 8 years ago, in 2004. Since then the company has become the second lowest cost airline in Europe, covering 21 routes with 59 aircraft. Mr Cruz described the values of the company as ‘sensatez y rebeldía’, which he translated as ‘reasonableness and rebelliousness’. As the young company it is, Vueling has embraced new technologies and also gained publicity in many innovative ways. Although the predictions for the next years are not good because of the economic situation, the reduced demand in some countries and the high price of fuel, the CEO of Vueling concluded the conference with some optimistic words: «The company will keep challenging itself to achieve continuous profitable growth.»

    About Álex Cruz

Mr Cruz started his professional career with American Airlines first in Dallas and then in London. Afterwards, he started to develop his own consulting project with Arthur D. Little : his own aviation consulting company becoming a partner with Accenture. After gaining some experience in the consultancy field, he started and managed the growth of Clickair to 26 A320s and 58 Europe-wide routes in 2006.  Finally, in  2009, he successfully merged Clickair with Vueling, one of the main and most important achivements of his career.
