The reception provided the perfect opportunity for our most recently joined Patrons to meet representatives from other Patron companies and to become acquainted.

Following on from the drinks reception, our guests took their seats and the President of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the UK, Mr. Eduardo Barrachina, opened the evening with a speech which highlighted the key achievements and developments of the Spanish Chamber over the course of the previous year, as well as our plans moving forwards. Our President went on to thank the Patrons for their continuous and invaluable support to the Chamber and welcomed this year’s new patrons: CAF, Marqués de Caceres, Meliá Hotels International, Natura Bissé and Green Network Energy.

H.E. the Ambassador of Spain spoke next,  giving an insightful speech which highlighted the importance of the work of the Spanish Chamber in strengthening the commercial ties between Spain and the UK; underlining the importance of the Patron members in enabling us to achieve this.

After they had finished eating, the guests made their way back in to the main reception room to network further and exchange their impressions of the evening with the Ambassador and President of the Chamber over further drinks. Later on that night as guests made their way home, each was delighted to receive a goody bag generously provided by our new Patrons Natura Bissé which contained a stylish beauty case filled with an exclusive selection of products from their recently launched Diamond Collection range.

We would like to thank our Patrons Raventós Codorníu and Marqués de Cáceres for their generous support in providing the wines and cava and also special thanks to our Benefactors Mahou-San Miguel and Estrella Galicia for kindly supplying the beer and water served over the course of the evening.

Regarding the current financial climate in the age of Brexit, the report’s findings show that free trade in goods and services is considered by Spanish companies to be of the utmost importance in the Brexit negotiations, with a view of mitigating the impact on economic relations between Spain and the UK. In line with this, our President had also stated that “trade has flourished between Spain and Britain for centuries. Our two countries, with a transatlantic spirit and large navies, were pioneers in developing modern trade”.

Our first Elevator Pitch event of the year took place bright and early on the morning of Thursday the 7th of February. This time, the event was kindly hosted by Chamber member IE University, at their plush office space on upmarket Kensington High Street. IE Business School is one of the world’s top international business schools offering a very wide variety of Bachelors, MBA and Master programmes at their campuses in Segovia and Madrid.

After the guests arrived and introduced themselves to one another over a coffee, they took their seats before Hannah from the Spanish Chamber opened up the event by welcoming all of the participants and providing a recap of the event format, which is as follows:

    • Participation is limited to one representative per company and a maximum of 16 companies can take part in each edition. In addition, no more than two companies of the same sector can take part in each event.
    • Each attendee has two minutes to explain the work of their company to the other participants. Following this, there is a chance for each attendee to ask questions to their fellow participants about their companies. They then have the opportunity to network more informally and without the previous time constraints over a late breakfast.

The session itself took place in a plush boardroom of the Pavilion building, just off the bustling west London high street. The dialogue flowed very well in this event with many questions being asked, discussions which continued after the end of the Q&A session over the delicious, healthy and hearty breakfast that was very kindly provided by the university.

On the 14th February 2019 we teamed up with our member Brandlond to hold a seminar about new retail strategies. The seminar was delivered by Marc Guitart who is the company’s founder, and welcomed participants from both member and non-member companies to learn more about the evolution of retail over the course of the last decade.

During the workshop, we learnt about the importance of connecting with people’s emotions to create meaningful experiences when buying. From the customers’ side things have radically changed too: they are no longer interested in acquiring just a product, now they look for a complete experience, going beyond the borders of simple consumption. These made companies no longer categorise them as users, but rather as customers.

Later on the 7th March, we joined forces with international insolvency practitioner Quabbala, member of the Chamber, to hold a seminar on the subject of company restructuration and corporate insolvency procedures; under the English and Welsh laws. This seminar, which welcomed participants coming mostly from legal backgrounds, demonstrated how important it is to take effective actions in case your business is going through a tough financial situation or experiencing restructuration needs.

The talk was led by Mr. Rubén García-Quismondo, partner director of Quabbala, who introduced us to the main concepts and procedures of company restructuration. We first learnt about the concept of company insolvency and the figure of the insolvency practitioner. Then we delved into further detail of the main characteristics of the three different categories of corporate insolvency procedures: rescue processes, terminal processes and solvent liquidation.

A few days later, we held the seminar “Women in the Workplace in 2019: Challenges and Opportunities” in collaboration with our member Diversitas Institute. Ms. Raquel Barrera, a Diversity & Inclusion Consultant at the firm, kicked off her talk by presenting some statistics about the workforce differences between women and men and explaining that the gender pay gay that exists frequently depends on the nature of the job and be it full or part time. We learned that unfortunately, the gender pay gay is not expected to be closed until 2072.

The seminar also addressed the impact of having a child on women and men’s careers and what organisations can do about it. The seminar created a great discussion between attendees who shared their ideas on the positive practices that companies can adopt as well as their personal experiences.

    [et_pb_section bb_built=”1″][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=”4_4″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”3.17.6″]

Then we delved into further detail of the main characteristics of the three different categories of corporate insolvency procedures: rescue processes, terminal processes and solvent liquidation

  • NEW YEAR’S DRINKS RECEPTION 2019

    NEW YEAR’S DRINKS RECEPTION 2019

On Wednesday 30th January the Spanish Chamber of Commerce held its annual New Year’s Drinks Reception, the first corporate event of 2019. This year the event was held at the House of Lords, one of the two Houses of the UK Parliament, located in the outstanding Palace of Westminster; on the north bank of river Thames.

On this occasion the event welcomed the Deputy Lord Speaker as its esteemed Guest of Honour, who was standing in for the Lord Speaker. The president of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the UK, Mr. Eduardo Barrachina and the Minister of State for Global Spain, Ms. Irene Lozano, also gave speeches alongside the Lord Speaker. The Ambassador of Spain, H.E. Mr. Carlos Bastarreche was also in attendance.

The event began with guests being welcomed with a glass of wine or cava upon arrival at the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace of the Palace. Everyone was then able to meet and network with each other over a delicious selection of freshly cut ibérico ham and Spanish cheeses.

After the first drinks it was time for the speeches. After beginning by thanking the Lord Speaker, the Chamber’s President continued with a tribute to the 40th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution; referring to it as “the key factor for the economic and social progress made by Spanish society over the course of recent decades”.  The president emphasised the importance of the political, social and economics relationships between the UK and Spain as well as highlighting the crucial role of institutions such as the Spanish Chamber of Commerce. “Under these ceilings, steeped in history, we the Spanish Chamber of Commerce reassure you of our commitment to Britain, to British society and to enhanced bilateral trading relations between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom”.

Next, the Minister of State for Global Spain, Ms. Irene Lozano, began her impressive speech by stating that “the United Kingdom’s hospitality has always attracted the best of Spanish innovation to establish its base here, from high-speed railways to telecommunications, finance, construction and renewable energy”. The minister highlighted the relevance of the Spanish community living in the UK “of which my government is extremely proud”. Regarding the current political situation that the UK is experiencing, Ms. Lozano commented that she firmly believes “that Spain and the UK must continue to work hand by hand in the international fora, in Europe and elsewhere”.

Following the speeches, our guests continued to network with each other and establish new connections.

We would like to sincerely thank our Patrons  Raventós Codorníu and Ibérica for providing the generous and curated selection of cava and ibérico ham and to our members Hispania  and Hacienda Villarta for their contribution of the variety of cheeses and red and white wines which were served during the reception.

  • HUMAN CAPITAL FORUM: Are you ready for Brexit?

HUMAN CAPITAL FORUM: Are you ready for Brexit?

The United Kingdom and the whole of Europe have been paying close attention to the last few politically-intense weeks. Here in the UK, Brexit is undoubtedly the most-spoken about topic for both the local population and the foreigners living in the country.

It is within this context that the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in the UK celebrated on the 24th of January the first edition of the Human Capital Forum of 2019. This session carried the title of ‘Are you ready for Brexit?’ and explored the key questions and different possible scenarios of what is in store for Brexit.

We were honoured to welcome three speakers from Ernst & Young, and in particular from the People Advisory Services: Chisom Jide (Senior Manager), Juan Pablo Riesgo (Partner) and Iván Sáez (Executive Director).

The forum focused on the following sections: the implications on Human Resources of Brexit, market trends and insights and potential changes in both the UK and Spain in the areas of immigration, security and taxation.

Two main conclusions were able to be drawn from the forum: First of all, Brexit has brought about not only some challenges but also opportunities for those who are lucky enough to be able to easily adapt to the new economic and political landscape. Secondly, immigration regulations and visa requirements will change, making access to the right talent more restrictive. It is of crucial importance that companies are considering how talent is sourced, structured and retained, while also recognising the taxation, social security and compliance implications.

While focusing on the Spanish side of things, it has been remarkable the consequences of Brexit on immigration. In the case of departure without agreement, the contingency measures of the Spanish Government will seek to safeguard the interests of British citizens who, before the date of the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union, exercised their right to free movement and to reside in Spain.

This session of the Human Capital Forum was very well attended and a fantastic discussion was generated, with all participants having the opportunity to get involved by sharing their thoughts and opinions. We would like to thank the speakers from Ernst & Young for sharing with us their invaluable knowledge and expertise and also Mónica Hernanz of the Client Academy for chairing the event! We are already looking forward to the next edition of the Human Capital Forum which will be held in April.
